Communication COM/2019/640 final

The European Green Deal, adopted in 2019, is the EU’s flagship strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. It provides a comprehensive roadmap for transforming the EU economy into a sustainable, resource-efficient, and competitive system. The plan spans multiple policy areas, including climate action, biodiversity protection, pollution reduction, clean energy, sustainable industry, and circular economy.

Key objectives include decoupling economic growth from resource use, ensuring a just transition for all regions and sectors, and mobilizing significant investments through public and private financing. The Green Deal sets the stage for legislative reforms such as the Fit for 55 package, revisions to waste and energy directives, and new frameworks for sustainable agriculture and food systems.

It emphasizes innovation, eco-design, and green public procurement to accelerate the transition. Circular economy principles are central, promoting waste prevention, reuse, and recycling, alongside the development of biobased products and sustainable food systems. By integrating climate, energy, and resource policies, the Green Deal remains the cornerstone of EU environmental and economic transformation.

Relevance to bio-waste and/or circular bioeconomy:

The Green Deal highlights circular economy and bioeconomy as key drivers of climate neutrality. It promotes bio-waste valorisation through separate collection, recycling, composting, and anaerobic digestion, while supporting biobased products and sustainable food systems. These measures foster resource efficiency, reduce landfill dependency, and encourage innovation in biotechnology and green procurement, strengthening the EU’s circular bioeconomy.
