Value chains for disruptive transformation of urban bio-waste into biobased products in the city context
The WaysTUP! project transforms diverse urban bio-waste streams into high-value bio-based products. Using feedstocks such as spent coffee grounds, used cooking oils, household bio-waste, fish and meat by-products, and cellulosic residues, the project produces items including bioethanol, biosolvents, bioplastics (PHAs), coffee oil, food and feed additives, and biochar. Each feedstock follows a tailored valorisation pathway, for example, coffee grounds yield coffee oil and bioplastics, while cellulosic residues are converted into bioethanol. Implemented through pilot demonstrations in Valencia, London, Athens, Prague, and Alzira (Spain), WaysTUP! showcases how cities can turn everyday organic waste into renewable resources that support a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.
