Food waste prevention in Hungary (Initiative: Maradék Nélkül / Wasteless)
LIFE-FOODWASTEPREV targets household food waste reduction in Hungary by raising consumer awareness and promoting good practices across the food supply chain. The project’s campaign, Maradék Nélkül / Wasteless, engages 300,000 primary schoolchildren and reaches over 100 million people through widespread communication. It produces practical guides tailored to catering, retail, food industry, and communities, and actively feeds findings into national legislation. LIFE-FOODWASTEPREV achieves a 4% reduction in household food waste between 2016 and 2019, saving around €8 per household annually and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project’s national food waste prevention programme is officially adopted in Hungary and informs EU-wide policies, including the UNEP Food Waste Index. Through collaboration with other Member States, LIFE-FOODWASTEPREV offers a replicable model for sustainable food waste prevention strategies across Europe.
