Multi-assessment of alternative fertilisers for promoting local sustainable value chains and clean ecosystems
FER‑PLAY is working to protect ecosystems, reduce EU dependence on fertiliser imports, and improve resource efficiency by promoting alternative fertilisers. The project maps and assesses 57 value chains from secondary raw materials, such as urban wastewater, stabilised sludge, composted bio-waste, feather meal, and spent mushroom substrate, selecting seven most promising. It evaluates environmental, economic, and social performance through Life Cycle Sustainability Assessments across three EU regions and gathers feedback from over 450 stakeholders. FER‑PLAY develops co‑creation guidelines, policy recommendations, and replicable methods to support wider adoption. Results show many circular fertilisers reduce acidification, eutrophication, and GHG emissions, enhancing soil health, agricultural resilience, and the EU circular bioeconomy.
