Promotion of Carbon-Free Urban Waste Management Policies for Sustainable, Safe and Resilient Cities in Europe
CLEAR CITIES unites cities from Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Slovenia, Romania, and Bulgaria to tackle urban waste management challenges under the EU Waste Directives. The project responds to increasing urban waste generation and consumption patterns by promoting waste reduction at source in households and businesses, improving separate collection, and enhancing treatment to minimize landfill use. CLEAR CITIES focuses on reducing GHG emissions and operational inefficiencies in collection and transport, while integrating emerging technologies throughout the waste management lifecycle, from generation to disposal. By sharing good practices and policies, the project fosters collaboration among regions with varied expertise. Its communication efforts encourage citizen engagement and policy alignment, driving the transformation of urban waste systems into sustainable, climate-neutral models that contribute directly to the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality target while protecting public health and environmental quality.
