This policy brief provides a concise overview of the valorisation, sustainability, and tracking and traceability (T&T) of organic residues across four case studies assessed by the Horizon Europe project BioReCer. Aligned with the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC and other relevant EU regulations, the brief outlines key recommendations for policymakers and calls for coordinated action to reduce dependence on fossil feedstocks and associated greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved by increasing the use of sustainable organic residues in support of the EU circular bioeconomy and the European Green Deal.
The six policy recommendation areas addressed in this brief concern: recognising organic residues as resources, fostering their use for bio-based products, mandating separate collection, enabling adapted certification schemes, implementing mass balance and free attribution (MBFA), and strengthening consumer information and awareness.
A central solution proposed is the adaptation and application of existing certification schemes to ensure transparent and credible bio-based value chains, helping prevent greenwashing and support due diligence across global supply chains.
