Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151

Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151 establishes harmonised marking specifications for certain single-use plastic products listed in Part D of Directive (EU) 2019/904. These markings are designed to inform consumers about the presence of plastic in the product, its environmental impact, and correct disposal methods.

The regulation applies to items such as sanitary products, wet wipes, tobacco filters, and beverage cups, which are among the most common sources of litter in the EU. It sets detailed requirements for the size, design, and placement of markings to ensure visibility and consistency across Member States. These markings aim to raise consumer awareness, reduce improper disposal, and prevent marine litter.

By improving transparency and guiding responsible consumption, the regulation supports the objectives of the Single-Use Plastics Directive and the European Green Deal. It complements broader measures to reduce plastic pollution, enhance waste management systems, and promote sustainable alternatives, contributing to the EU’s transition toward a circular economy.

Relevance to bio-waste and/or circular bioeconomy:

Clear labelling helps prevent plastic contamination in biowaste streams by identifying products that contain plastic. This ensures proper disposal and improves the quality of organic waste destined for composting or anaerobic digestion. By promoting consumer awareness and responsible waste management, the regulation supports circular economy principles and enhances resource recovery.
