The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global research organisation advancing sustainable resource management, climate action and evidence-based environmental policy. It works across sectors including energy, food, forests, water and cities to support governments, businesses and civil society in the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
WRI addresses bio-waste, biogas and biomethane primarily through its analysis of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), providing guidance on deployment pathways, greenhouse gas impacts and decarbonisation potential. It also administers the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which sets widely used standards for accounting biomethane, biogas and organic waste-derived emissions and credits. Through research, standards and policy recommendations, WRI contributes to global approaches on organic waste valorisation and climate mitigation.
