Unlocking new VALUE from urban bio-waste
VALUEWASTE addresses underutilized municipal bio-waste in Europe through an integrated upcycling approach. The project created three value chains converting urban bio-waste into food and feed proteins, other ingredients, and biobased fertilisers, tailored to Murcia (ES) and Kalundborg (DK). Social initiatives increased consumer awareness and acceptance, while end-user applications demonstrated economic, social, and environmental benefits. VALUEWASTE contributed to standardisation, informed EU policymakers, and provided a replicable model for sustainable urban bio-waste management, advancing circular bioeconomy principles and fully valorising resources previously lost in linear waste systems.
