Scalable technologies for bio-urban waste recovery

SCALIBUR develops sustainable systems to convert urban bio-waste into high-value biomaterials across Madrid (Spain), Albano Laziale (Italy), and Kozani (Greece). The project targets three waste streams: household organic waste, HORECA waste from hotels and restaurants, and sewage sludge. Using biochemical, fermentation, and insect-rearing processes, it produces proteins, chitin, lipids, biopesticides, polyesters, biopolymers, and organic acids. Innovative sensor-equipped collection containers monitor filling and degradation in real time, improving logistics and efficiency. SCALIBUR fosters circular economy practices, regional innovation, and industrial opportunities by integrating waste management, quality control, and valorisation strategies. A dedicated bio-waste Hub disseminates technologies, shares best practices, and connects stakeholders, promoting replication and uptake across Europe.
