This guideline supports municipalities and districts in setting up effective separate collection systems for bio-waste, with a primary focus on household kitchen waste and secondary attention to garden waste and commercial kitchen waste. It provides practical guidance based on best practices identified through the LIFE BIOBEST project. The document compares different collection schemes, highlighting advantages, limitations, and contextual factors affecting performance. Best practice examples illustrate how to optimise logistics, minimise contamination, and engage citizens for higher participation. The guideline helps local authorities select the most suitable collection approach depending on population density, housing types, and local infrastructure. By integrating technical, behavioural, and economic insights, it aims to strengthen local capacity for bio-waste separation and contribute to the EU’s broader goal of achieving a circular bioeconomy by transforming organic waste into valuable resources.
