The EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (FLW) is a European Commission expert group bringing together Member States, EU institutions and stakeholders to support the prevention of food waste across the supply chain. It contributes to policy development, monitoring methodologies and implementation of EU food waste reduction targets.
As food waste forms a significant share of municipal bio-waste, the EU Platform on FLW plays a key role in upstream bio-waste prevention. It promotes prevention measures, improved redistribution, separate collection of unavoidable food waste, and its treatment through composting and anaerobic digestion. By facilitating knowledge exchange, best-practice sharing and coordinated governance, the Platform strengthens the integration of food waste prevention and organic waste valorisation within EU circular bioeconomy strategies.
