The Environmental Coalition on Standards (ECOS) is an international NGO ensuring that the environmental voice is represented in technical standards, policies and laws. Working with a network of members and technical experts, ECOS engages at European, international and national levels to align standards with climate, circular economy and pollution-prevention goals.
In relation to bio-waste management and bio-based products, ECOS advances robust standards and clear definitions for compostable, biodegradable and bio-based plastics. It promotes real-world testing protocols and accurate labelling to ensure materials destined for organic recycling, such as industrial composting, are compatible with collection and treatment systems and do not cause contamination. ECOS also advocates against misleading environmental claims, distinguishes between home and industrial composting standards, and supports policies that enable high-quality organic recycling and compost outputs.
