A DECentralIzed management Scheme for Innovative Valorization of urban bio-waste
DECISIVE transforms urban waste management into a circular economy, targeting energy, food, and waste challenges in growing cities. Pilot demonstrations in Lyon (France), Catalonia (Spain), Lübeck (Germany), and Barcelona (Spain) convert urban bio-waste, primarily food waste, into high-value products. Microscale anaerobic digestion produces methane-rich biogas for heating and electricity, while solid substrate fermentation valorises the digestate into organic fertilisers and biopesticides for urban and peri-urban farming. DECISIVE implements decentralised management networks and eco-designed fermentation processes, integrating logistics, technology, and policy. By promoting local resource loops, reducing transport emissions, supporting urban food production, and creating jobs, the project provides scalable, cooperative solutions for circular, sustainable urban waste management with measurable environmental, social, and economic benefits.
