Composting in Rural Environments
CORE promotes composting and anaerobic digestion in rural areas to reduce bio-waste and prevent landfilling or incineration. It develops and shares best practices for source separation, sustainable treatment, and citizen engagement, supporting circular bioeconomy goals. Pilot activities span rural regions in Spain, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, and Greece. Achievements include training master composters, creating decision-support tools, and organizing awareness events such as Environmental Day in Bolzano and the Sustainability Festival Schlanders. CORE also addresses policy gaps by improving regional instruments and demonstrating compost use for soil enrichment in agriculture and green spaces. These actions foster climate mitigation, renewable energy generation, and rural economic development.
