Collection model:
Door-to-door “Quattro Select” multi-compartment bin system for single-family houses (two bins with four compartments; eight fractions including food waste). Multi-family areas use street containers; underground vacuum system planned. Garden waste collected separately.

Treatment model:
Food waste transported to the SYSAV facility (Malmö) for pre-treatment and anaerobic digestion; ~70% converted to biogas and certified biofertiliser for agriculture; ~30% press cake sent to incineration.

Key elements:
Innovative multi-fraction collection system developed in Lund; phased rollout following pilot (2001) over 5–10 years; voluntary participation (~80% of households); paper bags provided for food waste; biogas used for fossil-free transport (buses and trucks); high bio-waste collection frequency (households every 2 weeks, multi-family weekly).

Evidence of success:
(2021 data) 63–75% of food waste collected separately; purity rate 95–98%; ~140 t/week food waste collected.
