CIC is a non-for-profit association aiming at fostering source separated collection of bio-waste and its proper recycling into high quality products (compost/digestate, biogas, biomethane). With around 150 members, CIC engages different actors from the whole value chain, who manage around 72% of the municipal bio-waste produced in Italy. CIC is operating since 1992 to improve the circularity of biowaste through actions like the creation of quality labels certifying the national/EU regulations (for compost and for compostable packaging), by providing technical training to the recycling facilities, by monitoring the co-composting performance of biodegradable & compostable packaging in industrial facilities in collaboration with the Italian EPR scheme, by carrying out policy advocacy at all levels (regional/national/EU), by raising the awareness of citizens and by participating in EU collaborative projects (with a dedicated technical and administrative team) where CIC contributes with their experience and networking potential.

In addition, CIC operates a dedicated Study Centre (Centro Studi CIC), which conducts sector studies, monitors and analyses the quality of organic waste and compost outputs, supports research on innovative recycling systems, and contributes with data and expertise to national and international circular‑economy initiatives.

CIC is partner of the CirBioWaste project.
