The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) is a European Commission platform supporting cities and regions in implementing circular economy solutions under the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. It provides coordination, guidance and funding synergies to help local authorities transition toward systemic resource efficiency.
Regarding bio-waste management, CCRI promotes integrated approaches to separate collection, composting, anaerobic digestion, biomethane production and the development of bio-based products. It facilitates knowledge exchange among pilot territories, supports investment planning and connects circular bioeconomy projects with EU funding instruments. By strengthening governance capacity and enabling cross-sector collaboration, CCRI contributes to scaling up sustainable bio-waste treatment systems and embedding organic resource recovery within broader regional circular strategies.
