Citizen Arenas for Improved Environmental Quality & Resource use in SMART-ER Cities
The CARE project (Citizen Arenas for Improved Environmental Quality & Resource Use) aims to raise citizens’ awareness of environmental challenges and alternative resource management options related to waste, air, water, biodiversity, climate, and energy through citizen science and collaborative engagement. It establishes Citizen Arenas as open forums where citizens and researchers co-create scientific questions, plan pilot actions, collect data, and share findings. Citizens are involved in defining research topics, forming mixed citizen-researcher teams, conducting investigations, and disseminating results, following the ECSA citizen science principles. The project also includes pilots on community composting and household food waste management to increase understanding of waste impacts and recovery options. By implementing thematic sub-pilots across multiple local and regional areas and engaging diverse community groups, CARE fosters intergenerational learning, capacity building, and behaviour change in sustainable resource practices.
