Enabling underused bio-waste feedstocks into safe and effective market-ready soil improvers
bioSOILUTIONS addresses the urgent challenge of soil degradation, which affects 60–70% of EU soils. The project aims to develop, optimise and validate advanced soil improvers derived from bio-waste, while supporting circular economy solutions and reducing landfilling and incineration. It focuses on four bio-waste valorisation routes—blood hydrolysate, frass, N-struvite and K-struvite—to enhance nutrient recovery of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Expected results include at least five market-ready bio-waste soil improvers, demonstrated as sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to synthetic products, with proven environmental, economic and social benefits. To accelerate market uptake, bioSOILUTIONS carries out pilot and validation activities within Living Labs in Flanders, Valencia and Murcia, ensuring that the developed solutions respond to real soil conditions as well as market and societal needs across Europe.
