Demonstrating the production of plant-based biochar in the compost cycle and developing high value-added biochar products
BIOCHAR-LIFE promotes the large-scale production of high-value biochar from municipal bio-waste using the innovative Pyrodry pyrolysis technology integrated into composting plants. The Austrian prototype processes over 5,000 tonnes of wet bio-waste annually, producing biochar and thermal energy while using residues that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated. The project demonstrates a scalable, energy-efficient approach that closes the loop in bio-waste management and supports multiple industrial and environmental applications. Biochar, a solid residue produced by pyrolysis at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen, is extremely rich in stabilised carbon and can enhance soil health, sequester carbon, and be used in climate-friendly construction materials such as concrete and asphalt. By integrating composting, biochar production, and innovative product development, BIOCHAR-LIFE advances circular bioeconomy objectives, reduces CO₂ emissions, and provides a replicable model for Europe.
