Guiding the mainstreaming of best bio-waste recycling practices in Europe
LIFE BIOBEST supports the implementation of the EU Waste Framework Directive by helping local and regional authorities improve the separate collection and recycling of bio-waste. The project identifies and validates best practices, resulting in three comprehensive guidelines on separate collection, governance and economic initiatives, and the promotion of high-quality compost and digestate. It also produces a briefing paper outlining policy and regulatory barriers, two decision-trees to guide implementation, and a proposal for EU-wide quality standards for compost and digestate. Furthermore, a comprehensive EU guide and summary—available in 11 official EU languages—will ensure wide dissemination. By increasing collection rates, improving material purity, and reducing sorting losses, LIFE BIOBEST strengthens local waste systems and fosters a more circular, sustainable bio-waste economy across Europe.
