RISE is Sweden’s state-owned research institute, operating at more than 25 locations and conducting applied research, testing, certification and technology development for industry, public authorities and academia. It is organised into several divisions, including Bioeconomy, Materials & Production, Life Science, Digital Systems, Built Environment, and Safety & Transport. RISE carries out interdisciplinary research and manages laboratories and test facilities to support technological development and policy-relevant analysis.
In the area of bio-waste management, RISE’s Bioeconomy and Life Science divisions conduct research on biomass valorisation, biorefinery systems and the processing of biological materials. Activities include studies on composting, anaerobic digestion, alternative feedstocks, nutrient recovery and circular resource flows. The institute also applies systems analysis and life-cycle assessment methods to evaluate environmental impacts and resource efficiency in organic waste treatment and bio-based production systems.
